The top wine from Viña Progreso’s limited edition Underground Collection, only 150 cases are produced. This Tannat embodies the winemaker’s thirst for experimentation and innovation. Inspired by Gabriel’s time making wine at Mas Doix in Priorat, Catalonia, the wine is fermented in open barrels exclusively with wild yeasts. Everything from de-stemming and berry selection to pigeage is done by hand. After 6 months in barrel the wine is bottled without fining or filtration. It’s a lovely monster, black and inky of course, with intense black fruit concentration on both nose and palate complemented by meaty, smoky, spicy characteristics. This is quite simply the best wine we’ve tasted from Uruguay to date.
Incidentally the label is from a drawing by Gabriel’s Aunt Elisa. What a dream that must have been!

“Plush, fleshy Tannat that’s mouthfilling and dense, with balancing acidity. With four years’ age, the wine has integrated and found its equilibrium.”
90 / 100, Decanter Magazine, October 2019 (2015 vintage)
“Developed on the nose with aromas of prune, fig, balsamic and dried mandarin peel. It’s full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and crisp acidity. Flavourful, savoury finish. Holding on nicely. Drink now.”
