Established in 1870, Viña Monty celebrates 150 years of winemaking at Bodegas Montecillo in Rioja Alta. Historically this was the winery's top label and it has been re-launched in 2020 with two amazing red wines. For the Graciano, the grapes are sourced from two distinct plots; one in Cenicero, Rioja Alta, and one in Rioja Oriental at lower altitude near the Ebro River. The two wines are vinified separately before blending and ageing in new French oak for 30 months, followed by 16 months in bottle before release. And the wine is worthy of the drum roll. Deep garnet in colour with a sensitive, almost delicate nose with dainty wild mint and red fruit aromas. Beautiful, elegant and perfectly balanced.
"This well-balanced Graciano comes mostly from a vineyard at 444 metres in Cenicero, with 10% fruit from the Rioja Oriental. Dense, concentrated and firm, as you’d expect, but the new French oak is adroitly handled and there’s plenty of underlying fruit and acidity."
