When we visited Argentina in May 2019, we were all set for an exciting trip up to Salta to see Pancho Lavaque to taste some new wines (etc). Unfortunately, the flights were cancelled and we didn’t make it and so faced the dreary prospect of tasting his new wines back in East Sussex (not really such a terrible fate to be honest). But, bless him, Pancho flew down to Mendoza at short notice and met us at the airport before we headed home. In his backpack? A tank sample of this dark beauty. From parral-trained vines planted in Cafayate over 100 years ago, this is everything you could want from Tannat – black in appearance, succulent and serious on the palate and eminently approachable in youth.
