The age of austerity (in wine) is alive and well… and for those who like their Malbec to show restraint, subtlety and a stony resilience to anything remotely resembling ‘jammy’, this is your bag. Made by Matias Michelini from grapes grown in Tupungato at 1,500 MASL, the nose is highly mineral with a dusting of aspirin (in a good way!) and delicate notes of dried red fruits. A touch of early picking combined with extreme altitude and Matias’s inimitable style is much in evidence here. Fermented and aged in concrete eggs without a hint of age, this is a splendid example of the new trend for lean, ‘vertical’ Malbec.
