It's always the way, you go into a shop for a bunch of bananas and come our with a bag of oranges.
Off we headed in February 2014 to Laguardia in Rioja to see our old buddy, Martin Abel, Export Director at Bodega Luis Alegre, a relatively new kid on the block winery that's making very exciting modern wines from only its own estate vineyards. Naturally our primary intention was to seek out the best of the red stuff, our previous experience of most white Rioja either being somewhat underwhelming or absolutely stunning and already spoken for. What a lovely surprise then to find this fantastic Viura from old vines. The intensity of the fruit is superb, giving a really concentrated mid palate with no holes, and cracking acidity to carry the wine through several years' ageing. It's delicious young and is developing lovely, almost Riesling-like complexity in bottle. All things considered, including price, this is probably the best white Rioja we've ever tasted. The wine is unoaked, which we like.
