RIGLOS, GUALTALLARY, TUPUNGATO, UCO VALLEY, MENDOZ
November 2009, springtime in Mendoza, sampling the 2007 Riglos wines for the first time in Gualtallary… tasting the wines as they were intended, with aromas from the best Argentine asado filling the fresh mountain air as we sat and ate, chatted, savoured, and we were all agreed; let’s do it, let’s take these wines back to the UK.
Riglos wines, from a beautiful wine estate called Finca Las Divas in the upcoming Gualtallary sub-district of Tupungato, is a fairly new venture. It is a collaboration spearheaded by friends and business partners Dario Werthein and Fabian Suffern, with a real scoop of talent on the wine front: oenologist Pulqui Rodriguez, Agronomist Hernán Cortegoso, and one Paul Hobbs as winemaker-consultant. Not a bad start!
Most of the vines are still under 10 years old, a fact that beggars belief when you taste these magnificent specimens. There is a beguiling combination of intense fruit concentration and an under-stated quality that is impossible to ignore. The wines are gaining recognition quickly and we are confident that they will take their rightful place amongst Argentina’s finest for a very long time to come.
Lastly, we felt that we should share with you a few snippets from the highly entertaining, bizarrely poetic ‘tasting notes’ that have poured forth from the inimitable Pulqui Rodriguez, winemaker. We’re not quite sure what to make of all this; but it’s good fun. Pulqui’s notes might not be entirely serious but these wines certainly are.
