SANTA FAUSTINA, ALTO MEDRANO, MENDOZA

Santa Faustino is the partnership between Peter Weinert – whose family originated in Germany before coming to Argentina, via Brazil, and ranks amongst the earliest wine pioneers in the country – and his wife and internationally renowned winemaker, Graciela Reta. Santa Faustina wines are different from everything else in our portfolio in a way that is difficult to describe. They are ‘traditional’ and yet sumptuous; there is something distinctly Old World in their signature style, yet the winemaker is a modern artist at work in every sense.

We hear a lot of talk about terroir these days, and the cynics might say much of it is bunkum, but if the term applies to any of our wines then it apllies to these. Graciela works essentially with two varietals from two distinctly different places. The Malbec is grown in Lunlunta, where somehow the soil imbues a beguiling minerality into the grapes and this comes through in the wine. The Syrah is grown on vines approaching 60 years old in Medrano, and there is a purity of fruit in these grapes that would be the envy of many a Rhône Valley vigneron – if s/he were ever inclined to taste it!

You get a very tangible sense that these wines are going to be around for ever, future generations will enjoy future vintages ad infinitum. You want elegance? You want poise? Sophistication? Here it is.
