MAURICIO LORCA, VISTAFLORES, UCO VALLEY, MENDOZA

Mauricio Lorca’s wines display an elegance and lightness of touch that we believe to be virtually unrivalled in South America. His winemaking talents have been much in demand for a number of years and he is consultant winemaker at several other wineries but, more recently, he has founded his own winery and it is here that he expresses his own vision. Elsewhere he is able to help wineries create a vinous statement that is entirely their own because of his ability to understand their particularities of grape and soil; here he is at liberty to explore the corridors of his own instincts and experiment at will, with very impressive results.

One area for which Mauricio is becoming well known and that is evidenced through his wines is the use (or not) of oak. All of the wines in his Opalo range are completely unoaked and they are simply, intuitively created as thoroughbred exponents of the grape variety in question. The Poetico wines, on the other hand, use oak of various types to varying degrees and the results are equally spectacular, just different!

“Mauricio Lorca - chief winemaker at Enrique Foster and formerly of Chilean-owned giant Finca La Celia, Catena, and Luigi Bosca - creates his own wines using grapes from his high-altitude vineyards in Vistaflores, Uco Valley. Young and highly talented, Lorca is one of the few Argentine winemakers who believes that the true fruit and terroir of a wine should be allowed to shine through.”
Jay Miller, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, December 2008
