ENRIQUE FOSTER, LUJÁN DE CUYO, MENDOZA

“Estate Grown Gravity Flow Old Vines Malbec.” That’s the headline on Bodega Enrique Foster’s website, followed succinctly by the following statement: “Our objective is nothing less than to produce the best Malbec in Argentina - which is to say the best in the world. No expense has been spared, from the latest vineyard management to the stainless steel equipment and the new French oak barrels in the underground cellars.” We have to take our proverbial hats off to them because, no kidding, you’ll go a long way to find a truer statement; these Malbecs are very hard to beat.

Foster’s vineyards lie at an elevation of 3000 feet above sea level on the eastern flank of the Andes, with hot days, cold nights and very little rain. The first vineyard, in Carrodilla where the winery is situated, consists of 30 acres of ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines planted in 1919 and the second, in Las Compuertas, has 20 acres of vines planted in 1966. Every grain of energy is singularly focused on Argentina’s flagship varietal. If the wines share a common personality trait – all are very terroir driven and individualistic – it is probably their monolithic fruit purity and gentleness in the mouth. They are understandably hugely popular in the United States and they are beginning to find a loyal following here too.
